- Mihály Munkácsy, 1844–1909, Hungarian genre and historical painter, whose original name was Michael Lieb. In 1868 he went to Dusseldorf, where he painted The Last Day of a Condemned Man, which won him wide recognition. In 1872 he settled in Paris. From 1881 he painted chiefly religious and historical subjects in a highly dramatic style. His Christ before Pilate has been widely reproduced. Munkacsy´s work is represented in the museums of Vienna, Philadelphia, and Chicago and in the Metropolitan Museum.
