- The Bayeux Tapestry is a world-famous, 70-meter-long embroidery from the 11th century depicting the invasion of England in 1066 by William the Conqueror, including the Battle of Hastings. The linen cloth, which holds UNESCO status for documents, was likely commissioned by Odo of Bayeux and created by English craftsmen, and is currently on display at the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux in Normandy.
It portrays the Norman conquest of England in 1066 as a continuous epic. It begins around 1064, when Harold Godwinson is sent to Duke William of Normandy by Edward the Confessor, after which Harold swears an oath to support William's succession to the throne. After Edward's death in 1066, Harold breaks this oath and crowns himself, which enrages William and prompts him to decide to prepare for the invasion. The fleet crosses the Channel, and the climax follows on October 14 with the fierce Battle of Hastings. Harold dies from an arrow in the eye, after which the fleeing English confirm Norman rule and William the Conqueror establishes his power.
