- MANN WILLIAM (CURATOR OF THE EXHIBITION)

The context in which these four architects work is, despite the many differences, comparable to the situation in Belgium. After a long-drawn out process, these well thougt-out designs, in a contemporary architectural idiom and planned with modern materials, sometimes do get the chance to be built. Furthermore, the impact of architecture on urban-planning regulations, which in many cases are of little relevance, is just as limited. However, this does not mean that the architect must ignore these strict rules or the plainness of a site. In fact it is precisely in the search of meaningful relationships, accents, and responses to the existing situation that the challenge lies. The architects invited to appear in the exhibition and the catologue work on the basis of the belief that architecture provides the background to or is the foundation of social dialogue and interaction. One recognizes here a sustained effort to make possible a public character, not only in their buildings, but also in their urban plans. These architects confront the private world with an unusual and almost monumental dimension of urban life. They investigate how the collective life is organized, by which mechanisms it is brought into being, and how an architect can build up public space from the ground. (Katrien Vandermarliere)
